Holsten’s, famous for its delicious homemade ice cream and being in The Sopranos, just celebrated its 75th Anniversary.
According to Holsten’s co-owner, Ron Stark, the establishment opened its doors as Strubbe’s Ice Cream parlor in 1939. After a number of successful years the business became Martin & Holsten’s, and then Holsten’s. Holsten’s became incorporated as Brookdale Confectionery in 1964 and continued doing business as Holsten’s, which was owned and operated by Rudi Stark and Gerhard Kaiser. William Bartels became Rudi Stark’s partner from 1970 to 1980. Christopher Carley became Rudi Stark’s partner in 1981. Ronald Stark also became an owner as well in 1990.
Christopher Carley and Ronald Stark have both been involved in the business since they were teenagers. Holsten’s has been owned and operated by Ronald Stark and Christopher Carley since 1999 when Rudi Stark retired. They work hard together to maintain the integrity of this landmark by following the old fashioned tradition that has made it so successful.
Ron and Chris say they try to keep Holsten’s old fashioned atmosphere alive as much as possible. “That why it hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s like taking a step back in time,” says Stark.
